Regardless of damage, auto accidents can be stressful and time consuming. It is important to be prepared and know what to do if you find yourself in this situation.
What should you do at the scene?
If you find yourself in a fender bender, here are a few steps to take:
- First, make sure everyone is OK and then, if possible, safely move your vehicle out of traffic. - Contact law enforcement. - Document everything. Exchange information with the other party, including names, contact info and insurance information. Take photos, document the location, road conditions and any other relevant details from the scene. - Were there any witnesses? If so, try to gather their names and contact info. - Once policy arrive, engage in a professional manner. Ask about obtaining a copy of the accident report and try to include the officers name, badge number and contact info. You should also contact your insurance agent to let them know what happened. They will walk you through the next steps to take, start the claims processes if necessary and answer any other questions you might have.
What if the other driver leaves the scene?
If the other driver doesn’t cooperate or leaves the scene altogether, remain calm and contact the police. Try to remember as many details as you can(color, make and motel of the vehicle, license plate, details from the scene, etc.) and share them with the police.
Never proceed after the vehicle.
